“This book provides an invaluable glimpse into Spanish anarchism for English language speakers. Vilaseca capably reflects on where his voice sits in relation to Mella’s, offering an account that is hybridized, lively, and highly relevant to the contemporary moment of social struggle.” —Simon Springer, Professor, Human Geography and Anarchist Studies, The University of Newcastle, Australia “We have a vital need for works like this book by Stephen Vilaseca, which rediscovers, translates, and puts in their contexts the works of activist Ricardo Mella. Most welcome!” — Federico Ferretti, Associate Professor, Cultural and Historical Geography, University College Dublin, Ireland “This anthology will inspire contemporary revolutionaries who want to recall the roots of the debates, principles, and utopias proposed by early anarchists and socialists.” — Miguel A. Martínez, Professor, Sociology, Uppsala University, Sweden “This book provides a much-needed introduction to a central figure in the history of the Spanish anarchist movement. The incisive introductory essays bring Mella’s work into dialogue with current theoretical and activist approaches in urban studies and other fields.” — Sebastiaan Faber, Oberlin College, USA, author of Memory Battles of the Spanish Civil War This book is the first English translation of and critical introduction to Ideario, a collection of newspaper and journal articles written by Spanish anarchist Ricardo Mella. Given that Mella is virtually unknown to the English-speaking world, this book provides readers access to his extensive body of work about Spain, human nature, and a world increasingly dominated by capitalism. Suitable for both the general public interested in learning more about anarchist ideas and for scholars studying twentieth-century Spain, the three introductory essays help to introduce Mella, ground his work in the context of Spanish anarchism, and draw connections between Mella and the urban. Stephen Luis Vilaseca’s translation is accessible and engaging. Stephen Luis Vilaseca is Associate Professor of Spanish at Northern Illinois University and co-Associate Editor of the Journal of Urban Cultural Studies. He is the author of Barcelonan Okupas: Squatter Power! (2013).

This book traces the evolution of Singapore’s parks system, from colonial to present times. Further, it contextualizes the design and planning of parks in the general discourse on western and eastern traditions: early twentieth century western conceptions ‘imported’ during colonialism; modernism; postmodernism, and the contemporary ecological debate. Park system planning products respond to national policies and result in structural urban elements and a range of park types. Global (western ideology) and local issues have influenced park system planning and the physical design of individual parks over time. However, in Singapore the eastern literature has not addressed the development of parks and urban green spaces in terms of historical perspective. The publication reveals the interrelations between visual representations and changing political ideologies. Singapore’s system of public parks is shown to represent an iconography created by the state. Its set of constructed narratives elucidates on the potential social, cultural and environmental roles of public parks. However, Singapore’s park system presents a novel paradigm for expanding Asian cities, characterized by evolving urban imaging strategies. In framing Singapore’s case study within the broader perspective of eastern applications of western planning and design practices, and constructions of nation in post-colonial countries, the manuscript establishes the contribution of the Singaporean model of design and planning of parks to the international debate.

This book elucidates and maps the societal impact of experience and heritage, participation, and entrepreneurship in the cultural sector. The contributions address and explore the relevance of culture, cultural entities, and heritage as collective memories and reservoirs of experience for other social systems, change and societal innovators like entrepreneurs. Insofar, cultural activities can be understood as a bridge between past experiences and future challenges. The first key focus is the participation of people in various contexts, initiatives, and projects. Such participation unleashes creativity and connects different societal layers – culture, economy, and innovation. Accordingly, a second focus is the entrepreneurial efforts and ideas that originate within arts and culture. Readers will find critical empirical and theoretical studies that challenge the current understandings of the cultural sector from different theoretical perspectives and with different methodological approaches. A variety of topics are explored within the thematic areas of cultural heritage, managerial practices, participation, and cultural entrepreneurship, as well as their inter-relations. Ultimately the aim is to provide the reader with a better understanding of the sometimes conflicting, sometimes mutually fertilizing areas of the arts, culture, business, management, and innovation. The book will be of interest to scholars, students, professionals, and policymakers.

“African Heritage Challenges: Communities and Sustainable Development presents cultural heritage on the African continent in a futuristic way, invoking critical issues of sustainability and development, which are core to the twenty-first century development agenda. Development trajectories globally are strongly buttressed by the convergence between the past and present, where heritage plays a vital role, and Africa, though unique, is no exception.” —Prof. Innocent Pikarayi, Department of Archaeology, University of Pretoria “An excellent analysis of the unprecedented complexity surrounding the management of African heritage today. Emerging and evolving contestations regarding ownership, methods and rights as well as prospects of development and environmental schemes are some of the issues richly illuminated by leading scholarship. The book provides invaluable new insights for rethinking our approaches locally.” —Dr. Sada Mire, Archaeologist and author of Divine Fertility (2020) The richness of Africa’s heritage at times stands in stark contrast to the economic, health, political, and societal challenges that the continent faces across variegated contexts. Development is essential but in what forms? For whom? Following whose agendas? At what costs? This book, with a special focus on sub-Saharan Africa, explores how heritage can promote, secure, or undermine sustainable development, and in turn, how this affects conceptions of heritage. The chapters identify shared challenges, good practices and failures, and use specific case studies to provide detailed insights into varied forms of heritage and heritage defining processes. By critically analysing the often romanticised discourses of ‘heritage’, ‘community engagement’, and ‘sustainable development’ it suggests ways of harnessing aspects of heritage to tackle some of the socioeconomic and political pressures facing heritage practices on the continent, including the legacies of colonialism. Dr. Britt Baillie is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Wits City Institute, University of the Witwatersrand and a founding member of the Centre for Urban Conflict Research, University of Cambridge. Prof. Marie Louise Stig Sørensen is Professor of European Prehistory and Heritage Studies at the Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge, and the Director of the Cambridge Heritage Research Centre. .
